was working with a friend on a 73 olds cutlass. had original olds 350 rocket engine non HEI. it was pretty much original meaning not much had been done. i was helping him change exhaust manifold gaskets and brake master cylinder. nothing unusual.we took our time and got it all done and needed to start the car to begin bleeding the power brakes. it was very difficult to get it to start and i saw no fuel squirting in the carb. i asked if he had gas and he told me yes. so i thought he could probably use a new fuel pump. took out the old one and installed the new mechanical pump. was still difficult to start the car and when it did finally turn over he had to keep his foot on the gas pedal or it would shut down. had him shut it down because something didnt seem right. i still saw no sign the pump was giving carb fuel so i took it out to check it and then saw oil water mix on the pump arm. i was horrified. proceeded to pull out oil dipstick and it too had the "gravy" look. the car was already sitting and was in need of some repair before i was asked to help with the work we did. i have just never heard of blowing a head from installing a fuel pump. is this possible or just bad timing? thanks

No, the fuel pump didn't put water in the crankcase. You need to determine just where that is coming from. First step is change the oil and filter and then bleed your brakes. You do not want the engine running to bleed the brakes. That will make matters much worse. It takes a large air bubble and compresses it into thousands of tiny ones so you will never get all the air out that way. Just bleed it normally with the engine off.
