2003 gmc envoy 6cyl air bag light is on for no reason? just came on

Actually the light came on to tell you that the air bag system has turned itself off; due to some form of malfunction, which the control module (computer) detected during a self test.
As to why or what; it’s anyone’s guess; until the system has been scanned and code(s) are retrieved. Even then; the code will not tell you/us, exactly what is wrong with the system; but it will give the technician a starting point as to what circuit(s) has shown a fault.
I would also suggest taking the vehicle in for this repair; air bags systems can be dangerous, if safety precautions and proper test procedures are not followed to the “T”.
