oil pressure Sign In

I have a 1991 jimmy has good oil pressure when first started then drops when warmed up, but goes up when you give it gas what could cause that.

Re: oil pressure Sign In

That's the way all oil pressure acts. the question is "is it dropping too low at any time"?.

I would first try a new gauge sender and a fresh oil change with a different brand of oil. If the problem doesn't improve, then you likely have a bad oil pump or worn main bearings.

it only has 72,000 miles on it.After it warms up you can hear the valves rattling so i know that its not oiling good. I was told that the oil pump drive gear could be warn.Is that posible

No, not likely. That would stop it completely.

Re: oil pressure Sign In

I'll assume this vehicle is a 2.8.v6 because there were a ton of problems with sludge buildup on the oil pump screen on these vehicles..you can try some motor flushes to see if it helps but i never had much luck there.usually the only true fix was removing the oil pan and cleaning it and then putting on a new pump while its off..but to be honest..because of the age i had a lot of patients that opted to just drive em lke that and really never recall any giving away for lack of oil...good luck

I don't know if i would get my hopes up too much on the sludge theory on this one, simply because of the way it is acting. You said the pressure gets higher when the RPMs are brought up. Usually, if a screen is plugged up, it will aerate and drop pressure when revved up.

Either way you would have to pull the pump so I would never taker a chance on installing the old one again.
