I'm changing the timing belt on a 94 Honda civic 1.6 and wondering if the crankshaft bolt comes off clockwise or counter clockwise....I've been trying to take it off turning the bolt counter clockwise, first with a impact wrench set at 200 psi then a breaker bar and the whole car moves, am I turning the bolt the wrong way? And if not, what is the best way to remove the crankshaft pulley?...I have never encountered this much trouble before.

Its a regular bolt....turns counter clockwise to remove...but its a sonofagun! You need a special tool to hold the pulley...and probably a better air compressor and higher torque impact. The bolt has thread locker on it from the factory and i believe the torque is like in the neighborhood of 180 lb ft or something.... The last 2 i had, one,a Honda ,the other an Acura,i had to send to my buddy at the Honda dealership to remove. We at first borrowed the dealers tool ,tried with the house compressor,no go. look at this video...see if this helps you.. Good Luck Buddy! Remember when auto mechanics was fun!!!!! Jim

I have had really good luck with the IR 2131 composite impact. It hits a lot faster than the other impacts and breaks stubborn bolts easier. Just my thought. Being way2old is why I need help from younger minds

Thats what I need, that bolt is really been a pain in the a$$, I tried to find that tool and didn't have any luck...when trying to explain about the tool, people couldn't figure out what I was needing...the Honda place just kept telling me to bring it in and they don't sale that tool, what a bunch of brush-offs. I'm gonna check out that impact and that holding tool...hopefully I can get this job done. Thanks guys, the info was very helpful, I'll post back when I'm finished.Take care. Dave

The tool will do the trick. Next to impossible with out it. I bought mine from my local Snap-on dealer. But any tool distributor should be able to get it for you. Good Luck. Jeff

The snap-on man is real tough to catch around here, he don't return any of my phone calls,and he only shows up when he's desperate to make a sale, anyhow I found the tool at NAPA, cost $47.50 and I had to order it...be in Tuesday. I'm gonna see if I get an account with the Mac-tools, I see their vans everywhere. Thanks Jeff. Dave

That tool done it....after splitting two 17MM sockets, best to use impact sockets...lesson learned, I got a question, I know you pay for what you get, but does name-brand sockets get weak over a length of time?

In my experience yes. Especially if you are using them on air tools. By something with lifetime warranty so you only have to buy them once. Trade them in when needed. Jeff

Gotta laugh! My experience with "Lifetime" warranties is they are betting I'll die before the tool or a part breaks! Anyone out there need the tool that removes lower ball joints from a Corvair? T
