2002 Kia Sportage timing belt broke

I have a 2002 Kia Sportage 2.0 DHOC and the timing belt broke.What are the chances the it didn't hurt the valves? I was driving home and it just died.When I got it home and tried to start it back fired and thats why I checked the timing belt and saw it was broke.Thanks for any help on this.
