I have a 03 taurus and ive been having problems with the battery draining on me the dummy light never comes on so i did the old test and took off the battery post well it was running and it shut down on me in like 3 -4 sec, does that still mean the alternater is bad ? or do the newer cars just do that anyways ?

DO NOT DO THAT TEST ANYMORE. You may have done damage to your cars computer system. This test does not indicate anything. You can take car to most any major parts house and they will test batt and altertnator with a proper tester usally for free. LIFE'S SHORT GO FISH

I agree with RT. That test is obsolete for the reason that when you disconnect the battery with the engine running the alternator sends a voltage spike through the electrical system. Modern electronic solid state devices aren't equipped to handle that large of a spike and results in fried electronics. Easiest way to find out if the alternator is charging is to put a volt meter across the battery terminals while the engine is running. Voltage should be around 13.4-14 volts depending on charge state of battery. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

Welp, the alternator wasn't working when you pulled the battery cable, so you got lucky. But now you know and may pass it on to someone else. Thanks for the follow up. Just some helpful advice: To not shorten the life or burn up your new alternator be sure the battery is fully charged and tests good before cranking your engine after installing your new alternator. I just thought of something. The engine didn't quit as soon as you pulled the battery cable. It didn't die for a couple of seconds. I may have the answer to that, but I want to see what anyone else thinks. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

Short read and short note: Disconnecting battery with engine running with alternator NOT generators long extinct. Anyone thinking that way shouldn't be within a mile of a car! T

That is a possibility too RT. My theory is the back up power supply in the air bag module. Supposedly if the ignition circuit is severed in a crash the back up power in the module will keep the air bag system alive for 3 minutes. Since the ignition circuit wasn't severed, it may had enough reserve power to keep the engine running for a few seconds. You know that actually rings a bell..... I remember a problem similar to this, when a car was shut off with the key, it would continue to run for a few seconds..... Damn memory.........It was something like what you posted about DS........For some reason an a/c clutch is floating around in my brain.............. It'll come to me...............sooner or later....
