With my engine slowly dieing due to low compression and such, it is time for another oil change. Would a heavier oil or oils for higher milage engines help to prolong this engines life. I am keeping all fluids up and in good condition and just wondered if going with a better or heavier weight oil it might help the engine run a little smoother and a little longer. I am still getting very good cas milage and drivablity even with the low/no compression in cylinder 1 and about 75 in each of the other 5. I am having to add about a cup or 2 of antifreeze each week.

You didnt give us too many clues. Year, make ,model. mileage. You did say 5 fair cyl's,1 bad, so its a 6 cyl.A general answer assuming more than a 100k and 10 years have gone by is this: if you drive in the rust belt i would shy away friom the straight weight oils and honey like additives in winter. a 10/40 or 15/40, sounds about right . Any of ya'll yankee techs wanna add to this help yo self. In the south you can do with a straight 40 or 20/50 if needed. in the summer months you can even add the additive if needed.Bear in mind your not fixing anything just buying time.IMO LIFE'S SHORT GO FISH

I have had very good luck with both slick 50 and lucas crankcase additives. They both increase compression, and I have had impressive results with both of these through the years.

Sorry, it's a 1998 Ford Taurus SE station wagon. Basically cylinder one is very low to almost no compression while 2-6 are around 75. To repair this car with 129000 miles on it just isn't worth it as I only paid $450 for it. A leak down test showed air coming from the tail pipe and the radiator, and I am going through about a quarter of a gallon of anti freeze every week or so. The car is running and getting decent gas milage of about 19 mpg in the city. I have anothe oil change coming up and am just going to drive the car till she drives no more and wandered what I might do to extend the life and help the engine out as much as possible.
