Jessica

Not sure what a 'tumbling ' sound may sound like.......
Everyone describes a sound/noise a little differently..
What may be a grind to one,may be a roar to another....etc..

Any chance you can get a video/audio of the noise and upload it to you tube and post the link here
for us to listen to?

Also, no need to post duplicates about the same concern, everyone here reads all categories.

Thanks

Well, I dont think you could really hear it if I were to try to record it. Really its felt more than heard... tumbling, kinda like wet clothes in a dryer as it goes around. I just bought the car about a week ago so i am still trying to get use to the difference between my acura and the 97 rav4 that I had before. Also, I am curious to know if I should go ahead and get the timing belt changed because there are no records of it being replaced before. If the timing belt goes out will it damage my whole motor? Getting conflicting answers from several different mechanics that I have taken to. Also, this is the first time I have had a car that requires premium gas. Do I have to put premium every time?

I would suggest having a mechanic take a test drive with you to hear the noise
Its too hard to say what a tumbling noise is without hearing it.
Have it inspected at least to make sure its nothing serious or dangerous to drive.

As far as the Timing Belt goes,

Yes,have it replaced since there isnt a record of it .
It drives the Water Pump so have the pump replaced at the same time
It IS an Interference Engine, meaning if the belt breaks,It will damage the engine.

If you replace the water pump, get the dealer water pump. Our shop has been having a lot of water pump come backs because of crappy parts. I had one that I installed on a Honda Odyssey few week ago that leaked after I got the motor back together and it hadn't even left my bay. Got another comeback today on a Tundra 4.7L that the bearing shat, ate the pump shaft seal, and shaved the edge right off the T belt.

I told the boss that is it, he needs to sell the customers stock pumps if it requires taking the timing belt off or is driven by the timing belt. Labor claims are piling up. Most of the aftermarket ones are made in China and are funkin junk. Knock offs are appearing all over the place. Stay far away from AZ Duralast (Didn'tlast) pumps.

Another thing to stay away from is aftermarket hydraulic timing belt tensioners. Had two Dorman tensioners that pissed out. One was on a Honda 3.5L. The tensioner slacked overnight in the stall and when I came back the next morning the belt was loose as a goose. If I would of started it, I would have probably been pulling the heads. The second one was a comeback on a Hyundai Sonata V6 that the tensioner slacked and caused the belt to jump a few teeth. Got lucky and it didn't bend anything, but the engine ran like dogshat. My recommendation is to use the dealer tensioners too.

It's really sad because you try to do the best work you can. Everything goes together perfectly and everything is properly torqued. Then the job goes right down the crapper because of some cheap ass made part assembled in a sweat shop in some foreign country.

Can you tell I am a little disturbed over this? LOL

And yes, use premium only every time.
