Very Poor Performance

1990 Astro Van with replaced engine (from 1990 C1500 pickup). Unknown true mileage since engine was replaced, and I don't know when. Van was running rough, and would stall. This occurred all at once, with no warning. I first thought I was out of gas, but that wasn't the problem. After it finally wouldn't stay started at all, I had it towed to shop, and mechanic replaced the throttle body (figured there was a crack somewhere in it, since the vacuum was gushing out, and nothing else he did - replaced a gasket - solved the problem. It is now running, but still very poorly. Acceleration gives it no power, and idle makes it want to die - but it hasn't died on me yet. Can you give me some ideas? I'm thinking about the MAF sensor, and I wonder where this is located. Would it be under the engine cover inside the cab, or under the hood, and what would it look like?

"Vacuum gushing out?" Whatever that means? Guess I'd begin with a compression test on this t see what you have. Maybe even valve timing has jumped, exhaust restriction and so on. Find out just what you have to work with as you don't seem to really know, T

TBI fuel system on that engine doesn't use a MAF sensor. It is speed density which uses a MAP sensor. Does the check engine light work? If is it on, check for codes in the ECM by jumpering A to B in ALDL connector. Count the flashes of the check engine lamp. They will be two digit codes. First thing you should do is a compression check. Make sure the battery is fully charged and the starter is cranking the engine at a good speed. Unplug the distributor electrical connector and hold the throttle wide open when you do your check. Write down your numbers.
