1.6 16v petrol engine will turn over but not start....Help
Hi I have a 1.6 16v petrol engine. Its has done about 110,000miles.

The other day I pulled out of a junction and managed to smoke out the car behind me, the car then started to Kangaroo down the road at random intervals, just as I parked up the car was sounding like a tug boat.

Went to start the car the next day and the engine will turn over but will not fire, on rare occasion it will fire and then conk out again after a second or 2.

I have checked and there is fuel getting through, I have got a spark. We found one of the vacum pipes had broken off and have replaced that (have also called the AA out to try and start it and he tried all of the above and still doesnt know why it wont start) Have tried to bump start that car and it will still not fire

Extra Info. The Car does seem to burn a lot of oil and has done for as long I can remeber and I have just replaced the rear box. A couple of months ago we replaced the petrol tank.

Any one have an idea

Thanks vp

Fundamentals and a guess:

For a gasoline engine (petrol - love your accent!) to so much as react like it wants to run it requires spark (got that) - fuel (so far I think you do but pressure could be checked) - compression (probably getting low as you said it's consuming oil but also not the likely problem right now) - and ******** all this on time!

They don't sell that car here to my knowledge but it's the same basics. This probably uses a rubber timing belt with a known life expectancy and change interval - usually around 60-70,000 miles. With 110,000 miles now you are in line with needing the third - check suggestions in owner's manual but I would expect that.

That belt probably has a lot involved, tensioning it and keeping it in line. In that you noted spark the engine should still be turning when cranking by key but the belt could be way off proper time - age, wear, or a fault with parts associated with it.

The bad news is if that's the issue at hand many engines will self destruct if it breaks completely! I suggest you get help as soon as possible to rule that out. If you are up to checking this or apt to do this yourself you'll need specific tools and instructions I don't have for that engine.

That's only a guess but so important you don't want to fool around till it breaks if that's the issue at all,

T
