VW Polo shuddering question Sign In

I have recently bought a 2007 1.4 VW Polo. I am still adjusting to driving the car and one thing I have managed quite a few times is going uphill in too higher gear or shifting up too soon (my previous car had a bigger engine). However when I do this in the polo I have noticed it shudders - I assumed this was normal as when I shifted down a gear it would stop shuddering and I could shift up once I picked up some more speed.

What worries me is sometimes when I do this the check engine light flashed for maybe 3 seconds until I shift down and then it goes out. After it does this I always check for error codes using my odb scanner but no errors are every found... Is this maybe just normal behaviour for the polo because it gets close to stalling? The car runs fine otherwise and the CEL never comes on at any other time.

Sounds like you have 2 issues

First, you seem to have a misfire under load which is why the CEL flashes. That is telling you the misfire is severe enough to damage the Catalyst.

The second issue is your scan tool doesn't seem capable of accessing the codes so you need to be using something different.

Probably NOTHING wrong except the way you are driving a manual shift car. By the time an engine (any) is "lugging" is one term for that you are causing some or a lot of harm to it if you continue and don't change the way you drive that bad habit will come back to bite you.
Watch gauges, RPM vs speed keep RPM in safe range at all times when driving along.

If you really struggle with a standard shift (gearbox) if you call it that maybe time to think of an automatic you'll lose nothing for fuel use and don't have to worry about which gear you are in driving along,

If the check engine light is flashing, there IS something wrong.

Just me sometimes - top post OP is new to this car less power than a prior one said CEL just flashed a few seconds unless corrected. I don't think OP is driving it properly as said just me sometime. I ride with some folks OMG can find 'em grind 'em types in any gear at any time such a joke no wonder automatics were early to come along.
To OP: Whether there's a real problem or not I don't see it yet. Warning lights would come on if you are making engine struggle so bad it's about to stall or bust into bits. That's what a "Standard Shift" can do at your call NOT the car's telling it which gear to be in when underway as in plain driving forward for example.
Sure, each vehicle you may drive will be different in some way how it behaves it's newer to you, learn this one. Maybe wrong but by description you gave it's YOU not the car,

I guess it depends on a better description, was it sequentially flashing or just flickering.

IDK, Some of these things I'd ride with the person and see how they drove and find a hill see how they drove standards I call them this person may use another term for shifting manually was in between the lines didn't say some funky part auto trans or setting - that we don't know?
