I have a Volkswagon Golf Mk4 1.6 SE 8v and it's fuel consumption has been ridiculous at 17 mpg. I've changed the Lambda Sensor which hasnt helped at all. When I checked the oil it was throthy and milky, I know this is a sign that the Head Gasket is going, but when trying to fit a new Head Gasket, we found that the water level hadn't gotten any lower and there was a strong smell of petrol everywhere under the bonnet, and after draining the oil we found that the petrol had mixed in with it. Could this still be the Head Gasket? Or is it something completely different? Any ideas? Changed: Lambda Sensor Have got a Duel Temperature Sendor but dont think thats the problem with the petrol mixing with oil. Started to change Head Gasket but wasn't sure if that was definitely the problem after draining the oil found petrol had got into the oil. Make/Model: Volkswagon Golf Mk4 SE Year: 1998 Engine Size: 1.6 Milage: 136000

Petrol doesn't turn oil milky, water does. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

You probably going to have to take the engine apart and clean up the bottom end if your going to do the head gasket for coolant/oil milkshake. You'll never get all that gunk out and it will take out the cam and crank bearings if you don't make sure the bottom end and oil galleries are cleaned up. If this has an engine oil cooler, check it too. Once you get that squared away, then tackle the fuel problem. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.
