Urgent: '08 Avenger R/T AWD-Starter will not engage in cold weather while engine is hot

My 2008 R/T Avenger AWD 3.5L began having this problem when it had only 24,000 miles. It would do this only in cold weather & not every time. The car will start fine & drive perfect, after shutting the car off and returning in a short time the ignition turns on all lights, power, and every other normal lights. When you go to start the car the starter does not engage; there are no check engine codes stored on the system or any other indication that something is wrong. The car will only start once the engine is cool, literally within minutes of the temperature needle on the gauge hitting āCā. I have been to the dealer six times since the problem started & they have always stated that they cannot find anything wrong nor could they replicate the problem. My car now has 48K and is out of warranty, it also will never do this in warm weather (above 45F) . - The following is what I know while it will not start:
- There is 12.5 volts going to the starter even when the ignition is off (no key)
- Engine/starter is hot, to touch
There are no codes sent to the system I am at a loss on what to do; I want to replace the starter but do not want to waste money on replacing good parts. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Next time this happens open the hood and remove the red 10 amp IOD (Ignition off draw)/wireless control module fuse in cavity 17 in the underhood fuse box for 10 seconds. Then try to restart it. If it restarts bring it to the dealer and have them look up TSB(technical service bulletin) 08-007-08 REV. It happens more when its cold because cold dry air is more likely to build up static electricity, which modules do not like.

Outdoorsman1986 Thank you for the reply, I just tried that and still will not start. Ironically i just came in to my office from a job so my car was heated up and the starter will not engage since it is 40 degrees out. A lot of people that I talk to swear it sounds like the relay on the starter but are stumped as to why it only does this only in the colder weather. I do notice that if you are in the car with the ignition on when this is happening, after engine is cooled you can hear one heavy click when it is able to start.

Is it possible you could pinpoint where that noise is coming from? It would help a bunch.

I will try, I am pretty sure it is not from the starter. I want to say it is a triangel area between the trans, the fuse box, and the starter. I have tried every sequence to get it to start from in and out of gear to locking unlockling the car etc.......

When it happens next time check for power at the yellow wire at the starter with the key in the start/crank position, and let me know.

I checked it today and there is no power in the start or any position going to the yellow wire, I believe this is the C10-Pin 8-Starter Control Output.

Does it have a starter relay on it? Look at that.
