Trouble with a possible shady mechanic

I have a 1996 Buick Skylark 3.1L V6 Limited with 60,200 miles. The check engine light came on, I hooked up my OBD reader to it and it said it wasn't picking up the car. I took it down to the auto shop they had a bigger machine, they said it was the crankshaft position sensor. I'm in the process of selling the car so I told them to go ahead and replace it. 3 miles after leaving the shop my wife called me and said the check engine light came back on...so we took it back to the shop and he said it's reading the same code...after an hour of pondering he found that the harmonic balancer was damaged around the rim where the codes read from. So that was replaced. But I just realized that don't you have to remove the harmonic balancer to replace the crankshaft position sensor on this vehicle? My question is do you have to remove the balancer to replace the sensor? If so I have a bone to pick with this mechanic.

That would depend on which sensor he replaced. This engine has 2 crank sensors, one behind the balancer that the balancer does has to be removed and on in the side of the block on the back of the engine that has nothing to do with the balancer. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.
