Trouble starting (won't start)

I have a 96 Chevy Suburban with 5.7V8. I have a terrible time getting it to start. I have recently changed the battery and spark plugs.. However, it still has a hard time starting. Early in the morning I can often crank the engine 2-3 times and it will eventually turnover. But later in the day it could take 4-5 tries and I may often have to hook up a jump to finally get it to crank over. If I let the car set over a weekend it is a simaliar scenario as in the late afternoon. I know that both the alternator and starter are good since I had them tested several times before replacing the battery. Several people have suggested it is perhaps the fuel pump. Is there a way for a non car guy to make sure that is the problem since it sounds like a costly repair and is definately something I can not fix myself. Or could it be something far less complilcated that I can fix for a lot less money.

Get a fuel pressure check. Fuel filters on these should be replaced also and rustproof the metal lines and flare nuts that connect to each end as they are a problem and can make an easy job a mess if lines need to be replaced.

Bet it's a fuel pressure problem and it will cost some bucks,

Is that something I can do myself or do i need to take it somewhere?

What kind of things could cause a pressure issue?

Fuel pump and regulators could produce less than needed pressure causing no start or weak start or even not run!

You may not want to buy a tester and just let a shop check that. I also wonder why with a new battery you need to jump this thing after a few tries. Is it getting so drained it can't crank the engine? A good battery should give you many tries. That is normal tries...... if you just let it crank away you will kill the starter motor. I wouldn't let a car try for more than about five seconds without a rest and let the starter cool down. They get hot working that hard,

I am having the same problem with my 96 GMC suburban. Here is what we have checked or replaced so far. The fuel pump pressure is good, new fuel filters, idle air control valve good, cold start sensor on top of motor replaced. Is there anything further we can check or replace?

For both of these for a test. Try putting your key in just "run" position till you hear the fuel pump cycle off when it has built up pressure. If it then behaves normally on start up there is a problem with air getting into the fuel lines or pressure leaking down at injectors or perhaps check valve which I think is at the fuel pump (part of it) isn't working properly. This is kind of a first for this problem with these and it's problematic to test out when it's running fine things will test fineCrazy

We have done a version of this test on the 96 GMC. We turned the key to the on position 5 or 6 times to try to prime the motor, but this did not work eitherFrown. We will try it the way you suggest and see what happens this afternoon. Thanks for the new ideas.Smile
