Hi everyone - my apologies for knowing basically nothing about internal combustion engines. I am having an issue with my Hyundai Accent 2002 GS 1.6 manual transmission that I cannot figure out and I was hoping someone could explain what it possibly could be. I am presuming this could be easy for people with actual technical knowledge, so thank you in advance! It is something that is difficult for me to explain without knowing all the technical terms, so my apologies once again.
The problem started just a couple of days ago where the car starts up fine and backs up fine, but when I put it in first and try to give it some gas, it feels like the engine is unable to keep a steady amount of power. Instead, it vibrates so much that it feels like I'm trying to start the car from 0 in second gear. Everything is fine if I put it in gear and do not add any gas, but once I hit the throttle it jerks quite steadily and the "check engine" light starts flashing.
I figured it might be engine knocking, as this started happening after I filled up about half the tank with low-grade octane fuel (which I normally use). Fearing this, I went to another station and added some high-octane fuel (13 liters worth) to try and dilute the fuel if that was the problem. I also added in a fuel de-icer as it has been cold lately and I was worried there might be some water in the fuel line. Sadly neither attempt has helped. Any ideas as to what can be causing this?

You are doing fine Sortex - relax - this is a cool site.
You have a check engine light so there's info there waiting to tell you something. Some parts outlets will read the codes for you or do what you can to get a "code reading" and report what it says.
This car was probably made to use the "regular" grade of gasoline so alone that's no neglect of any kind, IMO.
It's the CEL (=Check Engine Light) that has me at a loss for the moment. Stumble with load could likely be plugs, wires or any high voltage parts (called secondaries) to ignition.
Are you up to date on all periodic maintenance? Specifically timing belt if used should be done on schedule as listed in your owner's manual - frequently about 60,000 miles or the km equivalent 90ish something km?
Some of your description sounds like a motor/trans mount but that doesn't really explain the light,

Thanks for your response, Tom. Based on what you said, I realized that the problem was more serious than I thought it to be and took it in to a garage. After hooking up the car, they found that there were multiple misfires in multiple pistons. They had to replace the ignition wires but now it's working great. Thanks again!
