Toyota T-100 pickup '96, 4cyl 132 K. Recently when turning key to start truck nothing happens (lights come on in dash). Will turn key maybe 3 times and on 4th try it will start. Now when starting truck- starter will not stop - just keeps running when engine is running and even when engine is off and key is removed from ignition it just keeps going! Have to remove battery cable to get it to stop & when hook up battery again starter will sometimes start running again and sometimes it won't. Thisa trucka isa driv'n me c r a z y . . . . . .

Does the starter look basically like that with solenoid on top of it? I think it's possible and likely that the plunger of that solenoid which both makes the electrical connection from cable to larger motor AND throw the drive gear is sticking.

I'd remove it for testing off vehicle and seriously consider just up and replacing it. It could be an ign problem but I'm guessing the solenoid itself and an off vehicle test may show it.

By now it's probably run too long too many times to be good for the main motor itself too.

I hate to ask you to test it again on vehicle with it staying engaged for a second longer than needed but it might snap out of it with a whack with a hammer on the top part which is the solenoid - if tried - AYOR.

If anything recent was done with trans, starter, clutch or in area say so for other ideas but for now I'll blame the starter which comes as an assembly,

Just a thought; Although rare, I've had some that if the battery voltage is too low, it won't pull the starter drive back out causing it to stay engaged.

Thanks!!!! - I wasnt sure to focus on the starter or the ignition switch - Ill try first replacing starter. There are 3 or 4 starters listed for this vehicle with different "kw" numbers (kilowatt?). Ill pull old one off and see which one it is. This truck has probably an unrelated electrical problem where parking lights come by themselves when vehicle is parked - havent figured that one out y e t...... I'll also try to get voltage checked on battery. Suppose to be 70 degrees in Baltimore this weekend - Guess what Ill be doing?

Hmmm? Now knowing that lights can come on by themselves it opens the book for more odd problems. Again - you can test your own starter as you already know it can crank the engine which would be the most common reason to replace one when it can't.

There will be a larger gauge (could be red) wire that goes to the solenoid from the battery pos terminal. Other wires may be involved and get power there too. Smaller gauge wire comes from your ign to the solenoid to trigger it which does two things, 1 - makes the larger gauge power (amps) connection to the motor AND throws the starter drive at the larger flywheel/ring gear of the trans to turn the engine. That solenoid is an electro-magnet and must fight a spring as OFF is it's home position.

As Loren mentioned - improper power (usually lower) can cause it to get too hot actually and the plunger action could stick from that. They are supposed to not overpower the spring just mentioned and give you a machine gun sound of a low battery that I'm sure you've heard in this or others before.

The smaller trigger wire could be jumped with clips even OR if that gets power in some messed up wiring would engage the starter as well errantly. Here's a crude graphic of what wiring is basically doing at the starter + solenoid.....

That top round thing is the solenoid - smaller body than the starter itself. Anything that would put power to the terminal marked "s" in that diagram would engage this style starter. Hope that helps......

Thanks for the great advice. I should test the old starter but (got it off already- only took about half hour - and still have knuckles intact) I'm not so good at testing stuff - more of the lets slap another one on approach and see if that works. Thanks for the help - let you know if it does the trick.

If you don't know just how to test that one let the store test it when you are about to buy the next! You can just jumper cables and one smaller jumper wire and test it on the floor or workbench off of the vehicle,
