Toyota Rav4 Idling Very Low in Park/Nuetral Sign In

I have a 2006 Toyota RAV4 with 69,000 miles and it's a 4 cylinder engine. I disconnected the battery to clean the terminals, reconnected and now the car is idling very, very low (about 500 rpms) when in park or nuetral and when sitting still in Drive with the brake on, the car is almost stalling out. It was idling perfectly fine until I disconnected the battery. I disconnected and reconnected again, but it continues to idle really low/rough. Thoughts?

High chance guess: You've reset the computer and it needs time to "re-learn" and usually will with so many starts or a good run of random driving. Use "memory savers" when disconnecting battery prevents that,

Thanks. I'll run it for a few days and see if it resets.

I should have said the first time that it would go back to normal and I don't know of a way to speed up the process except just drive it. If you feel unsafe or it's relentlessly stalling that would be different. It should be fine and self correct. Know this - in states where you get OBDII inspection stickers they'll fail you till it "re-learns" which is just monitoring patterns of too much IMO and watching, setting things for where the vehicle is. It will quit it soon,

Another thing you can try if it doesn't clear up is to disconnect it again and start over.

Those relearn pretty fast and Tom pointed you in the right direction to get you up & going.

You may want to consider cleaning your throttle body and get a fuel system service for maintenance purposes.

That problem is a sign of a dirty throttle body. As the throttle body gets "coked" up & less air can pass by the throttle plate, the PCM compensates by raising the base setting of the IAC (idle air control) motor (this air bypasses the throttle plate) to allow more air flow to hit the desired rpm. When the battery is disconnect, all settings go to default & the default IAC setting is way too low due to the dirty throttle body. Eventually the PCM will compensate for this and raise the idle back up, but it takes time. If the throttle body gets too dirty the vehicle will die until it relearns. Also it can get to the point where the PCM has no more room to compensate with the IAC and you will have a low idle or dying problem all the time...........
