Toyota Corolla 1999 Stick Shift Starting Trouble Sign In

Toyota Corolla 1999 Stick Shift, Mileage 1,49000
I have been having intermittent starting trouble with my relatively No-trouble car. This occurs only sometimes. When I move the stick shift to "Parking" it appears that sometimes the stick just does not stay in its place and I have to maneuver the stick back and forth. On occasions the car will start just fine. But sometimes when I turn the ignition on it just does not crank up. The battery sign comes on, I can turn the fan, AC, radio on but the ignition simply does not work .... no cranking at all.....just like it is dead. The car does finally start only after I jiggle the stick shift back and forth in the "Parking mode". I am guessing the stick shift is loosing its connection to the transmission somehow???? (just guessing...i am a novice). I have replaced a new battery last week but this does not seem to have helped. Any thoughts guys! Any help, greatly appreciated!

Sorry guys: just a clarification - my car is automatic transmission and not a manual stick shift. By "Stick shift" I meant the "Stick" to change the mode; parking to drive, or rear etc.

Re: Toyota Corolla 1999 Stick Shift Starting Trouble Sign In

Wild guess but has happened: Sometimes if battery cable connections aren't good at both ends the negative might seek out anything to make the loop. I've seen it mess up speedometer cables when real cables (still some are) and it might be seeking or picking on your shifter for a ground!

Whether damaged (if this at all) or just needs some attention and lubing up I couldn't say but I begin with making sure battery cables are known clean and good then fix the shifting issues. The starting issues will probably be solved if this is it.

Just a WAG (wild azz guess) when something weird happens like that with the symptoms you mentioned,

T
