My hubby and I are rebuilding a 350 chevy small block engine and we started having trouble with the timing right from the start. We made sure it was dot to dot, checked the distributer, he thinks the four bar. carb is OK. he was doing something with the oil pump turning it I think. We changed the push rods, the starter is fine. It keeps backfiring through the carb. it actually shot a fireball! My hubby is driving himself nuts trying to figure this out and except for looking into it being 180 out, he's tried everything he can think of. We have worked so hard on this engine and come too far to give up now. Help!!!!

Not knowing exactly how much more was done and how you may just have valves too tight - specifically an intake valve that can't close would backfire.

With hydraulic lifters it takes oil pressure to pump them up but should have been adjusted to a base setting for that specific engine first and when running you can get ignition timing right on target which also could be way off right now,

it has a bigger cam in it, I'm not sure of it's specs but hubby said if it was bigger he'd need a stall converter....he did have a dead cylinder, but I'm not sure how that was fixed since it will crank over and then backfire though the carb...it was backfiring through the exaust.....should he change the rockers back to 1.5? Would that help the valves?....I'm sorry, I'm still a novice

WHEN CRANK IS AT TWELVE AND CAM IS AT SIX THEN #6 CYL IS FIRING AFTER YOU LINE UP YOUR MARKS AND INSTALL GEAR THEN ROTATE YOUR CRANK ONE REVOLUTION AND THEN DROP THE DIST. IN - AT THAT POINT. IF YOU HAVE ENG ASSEMBLED ,TAKE #1 PLUG OUT ,TURN OVER BY HAND WITH KEY OFF. HAVE HELPER HOLD FINGER IN HOLE .WHEN HE FEELS PRESSURE SLOWLY CONTINUE TILL TIMING MARK IS AT 0. INSTALL DIST ROTOR AT #1 POST.

I dunno what should be changed to accommodate now a different camshaft. Ancient history on these was (don't quote me) to bottom out lifters and count back how many turns (six I think) would put them in range of hydraulic lifter self adjustment.

Backfiring either way suggests the valves can't close to me?? Could be several aren't right??
