Timing problem 83 ford f150 4.9

Trying to get timing set right. Replaced distributor. This is a napa rebuilt ford 4.9 engine, can find no timing mark on pulley assembly. Ran #1 cylinder to compression stroke and aligned distributor. Starts and runs okay, but has a definite knock or klunk at idle. Tried repositioning distributor with no success. Am I one tooth off or what? Can't seem to get it any closer.
