Timing belt crank repair

I have an 84 toyota tercel 2wd with a 1.5 l engine.
I'm not too knowledgeable with cars so I need some help.
It was acting pretty sluggish so I took it into a mechanic. What the mechanic said was that the timing belt is all out of whack due to something wrong in the crank. Weather it be the crank itself, the keyway, or the pulley he didn't know. He said I could probably fix it myself which is what I'm going to try and do.
What I need to know is what to do to get access into the timing belt crank. (what do I need to take
apart/off to get in there?)
