1997 Ford Ranger 4cyl. 2.3L 130k miles
I changed my timing belt this weekend with little problem except; when removing the crankshaft bolt I happened to break the plastic rear half of the timing belt cover.

To get the truck back on the road I ditched the cover and transferred the timing marks from the rear cover to the engine block, and I've put everything back together w/o the rear or front timing belt cover.

I turned the engine last night and it started right up, but with a very distinct "ticking" sound. I shut it off again right away and of course assume I have one of the pulleys a notch or two in the wrong direction.

The question now is; which direction should I first start adjusting/shifting the pulleys one belt notch at a time?

I assume the oil pump pulley position is not as critical as the orientation between the crankshaft and camshaft pulleys; so should I only adjust the SOHCamshaft a notch at a time in either direction?

Also, did that "ticking" sound while I ran my engine mean I completely ruined my valves? I sure hope not, I really can't afford it.

Thanks, Joe

Your best move here is to bring this vehicle directly to the closest, competent mechanic along with your credit card. You have done enough damage already. You certainly don't guess at which way to move the timing belt and if you destroyed all the covers removing them, you need to just let someone else do it.

Im afraid Hammer is right . You are getting ready to dig yourself a hole at the rate your going. If you insist on continuing the only advise I can give you is >>> Go to a salvage yard and get the pieces you have destroyed. Then install belt paying attention to alignment points.

NEVER GUESS WHEN VALVES ARE CONCERNED. TOO EXPENSIVE. YOU WILL HAVE TO FIND TDC AND THEN SET UP THE CAM SPROCKET. BUT THE OLD PINTO MOTOR IS PRETTY FORGIVING..............GK

So apparently all the marks I transferred from the broken cover were right, because now that I have installed the new rear timing cover(ordered from Ford) as wrap the belt on starting at the crankshaft then around the oil pump then keeping it tight up to the camshaft it is exactly off by one half tooth (meaning a high point on the belt lines up with a high point on the pulley)

with the old belt side by side with the new one it perhaps a millimeter longer (1/8 inch) but I assumed that was just due to 130,000 miles worth of use.
The part number read directly off the new belt is "TX276"

Thanks in advance for any help
