I am having a strange timing? problem with an 86 sunbird 1.8L. While base timing is at 8 deg with ALDC terminal grounded. Engine has spark, fuel and air. Cranks but does not start. With crank at 10 degrees BTDC (as per manual) alignment mark on cam shaft sprocket matches timing mark on valve cover, Distributor rotor points at plug wire number 1.

Now, engine is perfectly happy to run if distributor is turned to fire at 45 deg before top dead center. Engine dies if rotated back towards original marked position.

Timing belt in good condition and properly tensioned, has not been removed or altered.

Ignition appears to be HEI (7 pin module) external coil, non hall-effect, non EST.

Original problem was car ran rough for a month and then died and would not start.
After replacement of rotor, cap, plug wires and plugs car started, sounded fine and ran for several minutes. Died when put in reverse and would not start again.
Coil OHMS out good per manual. Ignition module tests good at supply house. Pickup Coil showed possible internment short to ground and has been replaced. Car still starts only at 45 deg before top dead center.

Anybody have any thoughts?

One thing I have noticed which seems strange is that, while cranking with no start,(dist at original marked position) my inductive timing light, does not fire if clamp is placed at plug end of plugwire. However timing light fires when clamp is located at distributor cap end of plugwire. Timing light works fine while engine is running at irregular timing position(45 deg before top dead center).
