1988 Chevy S-10 Blazer 4x4, 2.8 engine:
How do I change the fuel pressure regulator on the T.B.I. Carbuerator?

It's not a carburetor, it's a throttle body housing and the regulator is built into it.
It is sold as part of the fuel meter cover and has to be replaced as a unit.







NOTE: The fuel meter cover assembly contains the fuel pressure regulator assembly. The regulator has been adjusted at the factory and should only be serviced as a complete assembly

WARNING: DO NOT remove the four screws securing the pressure regulator to the fuel meter cover. The fuel pressure regulator includes a large spring under heavy compression which, if accidently released, could cause personal injury. Disassembly might also be result in a fuel leak between the diaphragm and the regulator container.

REMOVAL:

  1. Disconnect electrical connectors to fuel injectors. (Squeeze plastic tabs and pull straight up).
  2. Remove long and short meter cover screw assemblies.
  3. Remove fuel meter cover assembly. NOTE: DO NOT immerse the fuel meter cover (with pressure regulator) in cleaner, as damage to the regulator and gasket could occur.
  4. Remove fuel meter outlet gasket and pressure regulator seal. Discard old gaskets and seal.

INSPECTION:

  • Inspect for dirt, foreign material and casting warpage.

INSTALLATION:

  1. Install a new pressure regulator seal, fuel meter outlet passage gasket, and cover gasket.
  2. Install fuel meter cover assembly.
  3. Install attaching screw assemblies, precoated with appropriate locking compound to threads. (Short screws are next to injectors.) Tighten screw assemblies to 3.0 Nm (28.0 lb-in).
  4. Reconnect electrical connectors to fuel injectors.
  5. With engine OFF, and ignition ON, check for leaks around gaskets and fuel line couplings.

So to replace the Pressure Regulator, you have to replace the fuel meter cover as an assembly/unit? How much is that part? Car Quest has a rebuild kit for $70 and Napa for $42 & $56... Your telling me it's set at the factory as an assembly. What does it take to rebuild it? If the spring is under heavy load... I have every tool/press imaginable. I just need a spec. and diagram etc. Thanks so much for your help.

A rebuild kit is not but gaskets and seals. it doesn't include a regulator.

 Do they sell a regulator? Do I have to buy the whole assembly? I know how it is when ya call for parts, but you would know best! What am I looking for?

I'm unclear if the gasket and seal kit will resolve the pressure regulator problem. Will it?

Yeah, I've read them and ya' didn't answer the question at all.
So the diaphram that comes with the kit, operates the Pressure Regulator? Correct?
How often is the regulator a part that's replaced?
The Regulator is an un-servicable part and never needs to be replaced?
By using this "KIT", Will that fix the regulator situation?

I can't answer all your questions. I'm sitting at a computer miles away. I don't know what's wrong with your car or why you are even contemplating changing a regulator. I haven't seen the kit you are pricing so I can't tell you what they are going to give you with it. You asked how to change a regulator and that's what I gave you.

Well now I feel stupid. Hmm Sorry man.
Fuel Pressure is dropping off under load
Engine Cuts out
New pump and filter.

You're assuming something that you haven't troubleshooted yet. You need to use a fuel pressure gauge to find out what is going on. Regulators can fail in different ways. They can leak fuel internally or they can bypass at too low of a pressure. With a scan tool you can monitor what the fuel adaptives are doing, whether they are moving lean or moving rich and that will give you a good idea on what to blame. You can restrict ti return line to see if that causes an increase in fuel pressure to know the pump and filter is good.

Fuel pressure is at 12-13 psi but it drops off when I'm cruising and under load. I have a glass filter and can see the fuel filter is full. Scan tool is obsolete. I found a website with an ALDL link jumper wire I can make and they have software for my laptop, to view what your talking about, I believe.

I'd rather listen to a pro like you then the bone heads tellin me to buy the kit and change the diaphram in the regulator system.

It really sounds like you're in over your head bro. You could throw pumps, sensors, treatments etc at it, but those won't fix a bad ground, ya know?


Take it somewhere with the CORRECT equipment, if after the diag you feel you can do the repair, have at it.
