i am looking to get a performance muffler for my 1993 chevy suburban

alot of companies say that thier mufflers are universal fit, but that cant be right

what size inlet diameter do i need to fit my car?

Most Suburbans I have seen have a 3" inlet. There are adapters that can change pipe sizes to accomodate universal fit components. You should consider keeping a stock muffler because pipe sizing and muffler baffling are matched to the engine. The engine needs a certain amount of backpressure to operate correctly. Performance mufflers usually use less baffles resulting in lower backpressure. Remember, everything is computer controlled, if you alter the performance scheme, you may find performance, tailpipe emissions, and fuel economy may suffer.

Just a comment on this: Steve is right that exhaust is important to the overall good performance of your vehicle. It may be boring but keeping them up to OE specs really counts.

The older days of the 1960s and older we were forever putting Cherry Bomb mufflers, Glass Packs too that just burned the inside out quickly and made a car/truck sound powerful.

I will say these things sure did change the tone of the exhaust but I can't say they really improved performance.

If folks didn't know............. the 1/4 mile custom made dragsters were all beefed up for insane power ---- way over 1,000 HP and would even delete the cooling system but keep in mind that some of these engines only lasted a few runs before a complete re-do.

For real vehicles stick with OE approved parts and I think you'll be happier and richer for doing that,
