1999 Subaru Impreza hatch 2.2L 290k+ miles the computer said that my cam shaft positioning sensor was out. had my sensor tested and it was fine. car still won't start. after turning the key in the ignition you hear a sound like it wants to start but it sounds as if theres not any combustion. there is a slight smell of gas when trying to start it. spark plugs and ignition cables were replace within the last year. first question is why do you think the computer read camshaft positioning sensor as being my issue when the sensor after testing was fine. also could it potentially be my ignition coil pack or possibly my timing belt

there is no code that says a sensor is bad, suggest you post all codes, someone will advise.. Some basics you could try: check for fuel pressure, and then with KOEO observe fuel pressure drop, with a noid light ck inj pulses, ck spark at several plugs...

i cant remember what code the guy said it was throwing. all he told me was that the computer said my issue was at the cam sensor. so im just trying to get all the information of possible issues for it dying on the highway.

If it is a cam position sensor code, it is either going to be a P0340 or P0341. Did he check the sensor with a graphing multi-meter or scope? Really that is the best way to see if the sensor and circuit is good. If the sensor isn't producing a signal, a broken timing belt can cause that. Really not difficult to determine a broken timing belt on that engine. If the belt did break, there is a good chance there is going to be mechanical damage. thank you! still unsure what the specific code was. they guy was a semi mechanic but it was closest to where i broke down. he said the computer he used was outdated 5 years ago so i figure it might no be reading the problem correctly. ive been trying to do research but i can only find videos and articles of people getting no start with some crank. mine wont crank but when i turn the key it sounds like its going to start but doesn't sound like its (cranking) at all

If it isn't cranking, a cam sensor issue won't cause that. Cranking means the starter is spinning the crank. Starting means the engine is cranking and the engine begins to run on its own. If is isn't cranking, the starting system needs to be troubleshot. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

I will try to clear this up- you move key to start - 1)the engine spins, that is called cranking. 2) key to start nothing happens that is 'not cranking' so spinning and cranking is same thing. the engine cranks and tries to start - stumbles fires a cylinder or 2 or does not try to start no firing of cylinders..... sounds like your engine is cranking - spinning over but not starting... will need the code OR do the basic tests I suggested.
