Hi, I have a 91 Ford Explorer, and woke this morning to find that it would not start. I think the problem actually started a few days ago, as it had been taking 2 or 3 attempts to get it to start, and before it did it was making a strange noise…
Today, I made 3 attempts to start it, and at first, the starter motor was turning the engine over slowly, and it was ALMOST starting.
On the 2nd attempt, it was a similar story, but the response grew weaker until it didn't move at all.
On the 3rd attempt (And every attempt since), there’s just been a single “click”, and no other response.
We tried a jump start (although didn’t give it much of a chance, as our “jumper” had to be elsewhere), but it didn’t seem to have much (if any) effect. In any case, there seems to be power to all the other systems, and nothing electrical was left on overnight.
Which leads me to believe it’s one or more of:
a) The starter motor
b) Solenoids
c) Possibly the Alternator
d) Flat (Possibly Dead) battery.
Based on my description, is anyone able to shed some light on what may be wrong, and what the repair costs might be? Or, is it something I could easily fix myself?
