My car's info: 1994 Mercury Tracer Trio (1.9L) So, I was out yesterday (May 21) and went to start up my car and the starter wouldn't disengage. My cousin disconnected the battery and it stopped. But before he did, the starter kept going, even after I pulled the key out after I turned the car off!!! It kept doing this and I got it towed. But, the people at the auto garage said there was no problem when he tried to start it up. So, I went and picked it up and drove it home fine. I went to go somewhere two hours later and wouldn't you guess...it did it again. The people at the auto garage said the only problem he could think of is a bad ignition starter switch. So, we replaced it. Guess you guys know what happened...it kept doing it. I just replaced the starter two months or so ago so I doubt it could be that...does anyone have ANY advice??!?!?!?!?!?!??! -Ryan

Sounds like the starter is binding up intermittently......... I would change out the starter since it's still under warranty. If you want to check it out, just rig up a connector for the trigger wire, when the starter sticks, check the voltage on the wire. If there is 0v you have a bad starter, if there is 12v then there is a short in the trigger circuit that needs to be traced down............

What was wrong with the first starter? This one is probably junk by now as I doubt you could disconnect battery that fast and it ran too long so I'd swap it out under warranty now as it could have a faulty solenoid/starter drive that doesn't retract. If it won't demonstrate this again it will take some guessing and or looking for faults if working properly now. Ignition switch could be sending power to the solenoid or other wiring crossed and touching at a bare spot sending power to trigger starter, T

the first starter was just junky...i bought it off of my youth pastor, so it was 15 years old. And I wouldn't doubt it's junk. It still does it so I think I will replace it..thank God for warranties!!! Thank you for your input.

After asking a few of my friends, the suggestion that seems to come up alot is the flywheel is shot. What do you guys think about this? Also, the solenoid is another suggested culprit. Let me know what you guys think!!

A flywheel is a flat piece of round steel with teeth ground into it and serves to crank the engine with help of the starter motor and it also serves to balance the crankshaft. Why the explanation? There are no electrical connections to a flywheel. How could the flywheel keep electricity going to the starter? I'd go with a solenoid. Much cheaper and much easier to install.

Shot meant teeth worn off. Sorry, wrong term. I'm just a newbie at cars haha! Would you guys say its just a solenoid or maybe the starter AND solenoid or what?

Again- no electricity going to a flywheel, therefore, when your key is in your pocket, and the engine keeps trying to start, the flywheel cannot be the culprit, worn teeth or not! Standard or automatic?

Replace the starter solenoid on the firewall, next to the battery. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Just to let you know I got it to work :) The teeth on the starter that connect to the flywheel was the culprit (So my dad says...he did it for me today). It wasn't so much a defective starter per se, but its good now. Thank ya'll for your help!!!!

So obviously, you were wrong when you stated the starter was staying energized. It was just sticking in the flywheel which means the starter bendix wasn't lubed properly. There is no way the flywheel caused the starter to stay running with the car off.

Your the one that came to us for help. We can't diagnose anything properly if you give us the wrong symptoms and if you gave us the right symptoms, then you haven't fixed your car yet because there is no way that caused it.

We are very used to people with little to no knowledge of cars asking us for help. The people here try to do the best we can to explain how to save money with your car. Thats why you came to us in the first place. Yet you simply tell us what some other guy said. You realize that EVERY man who has tried to help you is ASE certified and has enough invested in their tools to buy a new Mercedes in cash!! We didn't buy them because we're idiots. This is what we do to make a living and we are EXPERTS in our field. So you have the audacity to treat the people who are trying to help you like crap. I'm glad you have so many experienced "mechanics" who are so good at what they do that you needed us in the first place. So please do us all a favor, pull your lower lip over the top of your head and swallow. If we wanted to help someone who has no sense of gratitude or decency we would probably get back with our ex-wives. You don't see us doing that either. You are a dick, and hopefully one of these days you come to a moment of clarity and realize it. Maybe you will even want to change your ways once reality kicks in. But enjoy your trip from point A to point B. I can only hope your car is followed by a a flock of seagulls with good aim and explosive diahrrea on a full-time basis. Good day to you.

You know, it never ceases to amaze me how some peoples attitudes will change once they think they have what they need from someone else.... I guess that really says a lot about their moral character. FYI, unless dad yanked the tranny & changed the ring gear....the problem was in the starter.....but spin it however you like.....I'm won't be losing any sleep over it..... Good luck to you and your Tracer..... I'm sure it'll be smooth sailing from here on out....... I can't possibly forsee any other problems with that fine piece of Detroit iron.....
