My 1996 GMC Sonoma will not start. When I turn the key the starter makes a whinny sound like a crank is turning but not catching (sorry, I'm not much of a machanic). Once in the whilt the engine will sputter like it wants to start, but there just isn't enough to get it going. This started about a week ago and has gotten progressively worse, and this morning will not start at all. I have a 1996 GMC Sonoma, 2.2L, Manual tranny with 166000 miles. Any help ideas? Thank you.

From your description, the starter might be the blame. The whirring noise is the bendix not fully engaging the flywheel. Make sure the battery and cables are in good shape and all connections clean and tight. Let us know if you need more. Being way2old is why I need help from younger minds
