Squealing with the A/C 03 eclipse Sign In

My '03 eclipse use to start a squeal when the ac was switched on. It was brought to the mechanic (as we just bought it and was covered.) and they just tightened the belt. Well a few weeks later we started hearing an occasional squeak. Just today it is a high pitched continual squeal even if the A/C is turned off. It is the worst when the car is just started or idling. After I get going in drive after a few minutes it's not as bad.

I was told that it was most likely a bearing in the compressor. I was also told to unplug the compressor, I tried this but there is little to no room to work inside this car (v6). I was curious what thoughts anyone had. If this sounds like the case, does anyone have an idea (approx of course) how much this will run me.

Thanks in advance,
Derek

Oh, and the belt does not seem loose or cracked.

This may be a belt problem alone. Quality and tension of belt are important. There is a known load using A/C and when you have just started the car the alternator is working hard to restore full battery charge after the expected drain of starting it.

If belt seems properly tight try some WD-40 on the belt's ribbed side and if the noise goes away get a good quality replacement belt and that should do it. If noise persists you could take the belt off and spin the pulleys to see if one has a problem.

A/C is just an idle pulley when not engaged and that bearing is static when it is engaged so if the noise is only when operating A/C - then unplugging it at the compressor would stop the problem till you can get a new bearing for the clutch for the compressor,

Ok,

I will break out the wd-40 first and see if that does the trick. Thanks for the info. I will post the results!

Hey thanks for the direction. Instead of costly repairs I did some more playing around with it, did the wd-40 and no more squeak, and realized the tension pully was darn near falling off. After taking off half a ton of plastic I was able to reach the center of the pully, tighten it down and now it works better than ever. Thanks again for the advice!
