Is there some sort of ‘all purpose’ spray lubricant that can be sprayed on moving parts? Last week I noticed a small occasional squeak coming from my engine so I assumed that it was an issue with my belt. I bought some belt dressing and sprayed the belt. Now the squeak is VERY loud and constant. The belt dressing had that the opposite effect. My best guess is that I have a bearing going bad on one of the components that the belt turns. I’m afraid to take the belt off. Is there another way to find the problem? Is there some sort of grease/lubricant that I can easily apply to the moving parts to help locate the issue?

Belt tension needs to be right and a good belt. The dressing I know of is sticky for an emergency to make a loose one work till you can replace it or tighten it and can make noise. If a pulley is suspect you should take the belt off and feel the pulleys. If thought to be belt noise and all is otherwise well there are belts sold to be quiet, T

You are now going to have to undo what you have done with the spray. Never spray anything other than water on your belts. The belt will have to be replaced now and all the pulleys cleaned. You didn't bother to post any info about your vehicle so i can't help you with any suggestions as to what your problem might be. Spraying a mist of water on the belt will immediately tell you if the belt itself is causing the noise. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Yes, and they probably were, right up until the time you sprayed gunk all over them.

Is there a good lubricant for the pully and alternator? I'd like to avoid taking everything apart and replacing my belt. I have to say that I've used belt dressing in the past without devistaing all componants involved. I've taken the belt off and when I spin the pully I get a rubbing/sqweak. The alternator has a very-very subtle sqeak when I spin the shaft.

You don't lubricate pulleys or alternators. They are all sealed bearing and if they get noisy, they get replaced, no other option.
