Spark plug wires stuck, and don't get me started on the distributor cap... Sign In

So, I'm attempting to do a tuneup on a 1995 Jeep Cherokee Sport with 150,000 miles. The screws/bolts holding distributor cap are corroded and rounded to the point I can't even get a socket on them. Any ideas? Seeing no carbon tracks I decided to at least get the plugs and wires changed today. I can't get the wires off. Even with the cheap plastic wire puller I got at Autozone (it just slips right off). Does anyone have any advice on how to get these wires off? The #1 is right under the hose to the radiator. Would I normally need to drain the radiator to get a plug wire off? Seems excessive. I can twist the wire but it doesn't seem to want to come off. Perhaps I just need a better wire puller?

OK, after short break I went back at it and realized I just wasn't pulling hard enough. I tossed the cheapo spark plug puller and used a pair of channel locks (I was replacing the wires anyway per another of my posts on this forum). The #1 and #6 wires are tricky due to their location but they are manageable. I still haven't determined what to do about the distributor but there are no obvious carbon tracks or cracks on the outside. The spark plugs and wires are now replaced and the engine is running noticeably smoother.

I don't know how you'll like the sounds of this as it seems a little radical but it worked for me as I had the same problem. I first bought a new cap, rotor, wires, spark plugs and some silicon grease plus a small bottle of rubber glue. I took a flat tipped screw driver and hammer and gently broke the outer part of the cap away from the screws and removed the cap and rotor. Then I used a pair of small vise grips to lock onto the cap bolts and removed them. I then inspected for any damage and seeing none, Put the new rotor and cap back on. Then I coated the cap terminals with the silicon grease as well as the spark plug tips after installing them. Next I put some rubber glue on the cap screws, put the wires on and haven't had a problem since. When doing stuff like this, be careful, wear protective eye gear, work like a surgeon, not "Grog" the caveman. Good luck.

I have good luck with a penetrating oil called PB. Yes when you are replacing a part like that and you just can't get a grip on the bolt or screw breaking it off works. Go easy though as it that sucker breaks off flush you'll have hell to pay to extract the broken stud left in there. Try a selection of sockets that may just hammer down over rounded stuff and that can work to grab it. Again go easy or you may need another distributor over that!
