Spark-Plug Change: ‘02 Jetta, 4-Cyl, 2-L, 80k miles Sign In

My two issues are access and uncertainty about pulling the wires from the plugs. I’ve reviewed several Chilton’s manuals at a few local libraries, but can’t seem to find a step-by-step procedure for a plug change.

Each wire has a long aluminum “socket” that fits over the plug. Each “socket” has a small pair of fins that I’m guessing mate with a special tool for removal. It also appears impossible to access the two middle plugs (#s 2 & 3) without removing the intake manifold.

So, I have two basic questions:
1) Is the “socket” a pressed fit and pulls straight off? Or is it a bayonet or some other type of fit that I should know about?
2) Do you need to take off the intake manifold or is there a different technique for accessing the middle plugs?

May I suggest getting some help and watch how it's done? This isn't rocket science. No offence intended,
