1987 Dodge Charger/Omni 2.2L 4 cyl base model, carburator, manual trans. The symptom is severe hesitation/bog down when starting out in first gear. Baby the clutch to get it going and it recovers and accelorates well. Then as driving along, frequent, but not constant misfire. When parked in neutral, no sign of the symptoms. I've eliminated the following as a problem: plugs/wires, distributor cap/rotor, coil, fuel pump & filter, vacuum system, egr, pcv. Performed a compression test and found #4 to be somewhat lower compared to others. Also #4 plug is difficult to turn going in or taking out. I've heard there was a small problem with the original head gasket on this motor where it would get pinched and allow a small leak into one of the cylinders.

I guess I stumped everyone...now I don't feel so bad I can't figure this out. I'm thinking something might being going on in cylinder 4, but also I haven't pulled the distributor to see if it has issues. Any suggestions?

An 87 with a carb. Most of us wouldn't even look at it if it came into the shop. Not the kind of problem your going to find an answer to over the internet.
