Screeching Noise when car turns on Sign In

My car has been making a very loud and irritating screeching noise when I turn my car on. It persists for about 5 minutes until my engine is warm or has been running for a while I guess. The car works fine, but the sound is extremely annoying. I assumed it was the belt, so I got some belt dressing and sprayed it thoroughly on it but it has not made a difference. Any advice?

I really don't like using belt dressing cause its only a temp fix,you need to look at the belts for signs of wear like cracks/raged edges, and v-belts shiny sides, also check the belt tension and look at it to see if its vibrating/or kinda flapping if all proves positive the noise could be a bad tensioner pulley/idler pulley/ or even a a/c clutch plate depending on year, make, model which would help btwWinkSmile

Screeching belts have always been explained to me as "loose belts". The screeching is the slipping of the belts under the hood. My suggestions is get em tentioned up, like Dave said.
