Saturn Sc2 dead cylinder

1996 saturn sc2 coupe 1.9 L DOHC 165,000 The car has dropped the number 3 cylinder. I have eliminated the possibility of a cracked head and there is no sign of damage to the combustion chamber. I am toying with the idea of a coil.... is it a common problem for this engine and is it possible for half a coil to burn out.

There is no such thing as half a coil. One coil fires 2 cylinders simultaneously. Pull the spark plug and see if it is getting fouled or burning clear white. If it's getting fouled, do a compression test and test for spark. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

I didn't give you ideas. I gave you a method to isolate your problem.

There is no magic wand here. You run tests, you get results. Test results lead to the cause. If you truly have spark and compression, that only leaves fuel. Test the injector pulse and if that's good, it only leaves the injector ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.
