S-10 2.2L engine noise

Hi
Have a 1998 S-10 2.2L. 140,000. It developed a nasty rattle at start-up (almost overnight). Oil pressure looks high when cold (70psi) Noise seems to be coming from valve train (I would suspect). Noise drops off considerately when warm, as does the oil pressure (20-60 psi) Oil's been changed every 3-4000 miles with OEM filters. Switched to Mobil one 10-30 when noise started. No better. Oil has been inspected for metal and is normal. I'm suspecting lifter problem, but then rocker arms, push rods, etc etc. Also, I'm not too keen on putting new lifters on a cam with that high mileage. I see it's a rather involved repair due to having to remove the head. I need an experienced mechanic's opinion who has had some relations with this little engine.

You might want to look closely at the fan clutch...
The space between the exhaust and the A-arm...it's very close (check you motor mounts).
Also, there is a metal shield on top of the exhaust side motor mount that can rattle like crazy.
And, the Cats have a crazy way of ratteling until it gets hot.
Finally, there is a metal cover on you exhaust manifold that can rattle (just push it down with a wrench).

Thanks for your response. I took the fan off. As for the shields, The one on the manifold is intact. The one on the cat is gone. It was adding to the rattle. The cat has been replaced. I know the noise you speak of. Engine mounts appear intact. I used a piece of PVC pipe to try and isolate the noise. It's coming from the valve cover. I'm a mechanic by trade, so I have already done most of checking. I just have 0 experience with this engine and it's " habits", aside from routine things.

Ya know, the last thing I can think of is the lifter guides.
Here is what I mean, the lifters in these trucks are the Melling JB-2270 hydraulic roller style; they can go bad. Also, they can turn in the lifter guides--like my last motor did--and
cut a goove in the cam that sounds just like a bad lifter but is actually the cam being cut by the roller turned sideways.
......I have had several of these motors and I built a new one just last month.
I have been all over this 2.2 LN2 4 Cyl. engine. I have some tapping in the new motor (4300 miles installed on 10/10/11), I'll probably pull it apart----soon----and take a look at the lifters.....
If you catch it soon enough, you can keep the cam, or if not, replace the cam and lifters in one shot..............

Thanks, I guess it's time for new. Only way to be sure is rip it. Many other nagging little PITA things are wrong also.
It's too old and so am I. Thank you, I really appreciate your advice.

You could always just let a professional listen to it like most people do.

The stick doesn't do you any good if you don't have the knowledge and experience to recognize the noise so my advice is head to the mechanic.

I have listened to it with a stethoscope, and don't like what I hear.
And there is no guarantee the "person" who inspects it will have the
needed knowledge and experience with this particular engine. I'd rather
do it myself.
What could go wrong?  (Totally Rhetorical)

Well, if he doesn't have the knowledge and experience, that comes right back to you for choosing the wrong shop. You don't know what it is so you need someone that does.

Well, alot could go wrong....
Listen to the valve train:
CAM: It should sound like ball bearing rolling down a pipe.
Why, well, this is a "Roller" motor. By that I mean that the lifters and the rocker arms have ball bearing and roller balls on them.
So, the lifters sound like ball bearing rolling down a pipe and rockers should make almost no noise of the same kind.
VALVES: If you are getting some sort of miss out of the truck and you notice a small--or lound tapping sound--or if the engine is shaking--you are getting a valve that is going out of time.
i.e. open too short, or just out of time......the cam is breaking up and lossing lift.
TIMING CHAIN: you should hear the same "hum" of turning gears with no interrupts.
These timing sets in the 2.2 Ln2 4 Cyl. are all steel and they never go bad. The one issue that these motors can have is that the plastic on the
tensioner can break off and jam the belt, then you get a metal slapping sound. Also,--I have heard--that the cloyes tensioner losses it's tension when the oil gets cold, so
use the OEM "ACdelco tensioner......
RODS: any sound coming from the oil pan should have the same smooth "hum" as the top of the valve train.
OIL PUMP: This can get tricky. I have never heard an oil pump go bad. I would have a hard time saying "OH, that's the oil pump".
Generally, you just loose oil pressure, but that can also be because of Cam bearing in this motor......very tricky grasshopper.
OIL PAN: if you see metal shinny chrome flakes in the oil pan.....time for a rebuild.
These 2.2 Ln2 motors are almost bullet proof except for the nylon lifter guides in the 98 and up engines. The basic thing to thing about is does it sound like a "hum" with no interuptions of the sound.
That's basically all that I know, If I hear anything in the motor that sounds like anything above I get my stuff together for a rebuild........
