Restarting warm engine Sign In

1971 Ford F-100 with 302 V-8 engine and 87,000 miles.

Cold engine starts every time - no problem.

After driving vehicle and while the engine is still warm, the engine will sometimes (not always) be difficult to start. When this occurs, the engine seems flooded and must be cranked (accelerator to floor) as if the engine was flooded. I have had the vehicle into the shop and mechanic installed an automatic choke but the problem still exists.

I'm not a mechanic, but in my mind, I picture a valve, maybe from the fuel pump to the carborator not fully seating and gas seeping into the carborator flooding out the engine. Is this possible?

Any ideas or suggestions welcome. Great riding truck but I'm concern about being stranded.
Thanks!

The carburetor probably is leaking gas down the barrel after it's shut off. Remove the air filter and run it until it's warm, shut it off and look down the carb for either smoke rising or fuel dripping on top of the throttle plates. If it is, then your going to have to replace the carb with a reman.

Thanks! The carb was rebuilt ten years ago and the vehicle driven about 1000 miles per year.

If the carb is leaking gas down the barrel, would this happen all the time or can it just happen occasionally?

Thanks again!

It could happen either way. If it was rebuilt 10 years ago, it's time to do it again.
