help i have a renault clio rsi 1.8 8v (1993), the car does not start, i mean does not even turn over,
plus there is a warning light on the dashboard,
LOOKS LIKE THIS

ok so put in the key, turn, warnig light comes up, turn the key to start the car, all you hear is the regelators clicking, car dont turn over, i have checked regelators(they work) changed the engine coil but still nothing ?
can anybody help

nope the engine does not even crank over, i am so stuck ppl been telling me book it in for a diagnostic check but i dont think itis the electrics unless you no better. please help and thanks for the reply

The first thing is to know that the battery is good and charged up. If available try a jump start or charge the battery with a separate charger. Clean battery terminal connections (remove neg battery cable first and that be the last hooked back up) and follow each cable - neg to engine grounding and pos cable connections all the way to the starter motor. You can clean those while the negative battery cable is disconnected at the battery.
Would be nice if you had a test light and a multi-meter or just voltmeter for further testing. We'll need to know that battery and connections are good before we can go further with this. There isn't a lot to diagnose without this for a beginning,

I'm watching as are the others here. The suggestions are to just get it to where we know a bit more about the battery and things as said. Can't say at all what else it might be or just that till we know.
This would be like testing a fuel system without knowing there was in fact fuel in it - if you know what I mean?

ok checked battery good full charged and terminals clear, like i said when trying to start car you can hear the regelaters click, checked and they working, checked coil, working, is it pointing at the starter moter? i have booked a diagnostic check for 2moro but man said car dont need 1 if it is not starting? thanks for ya help so far.

Ok: I have to trust you that this battery is ok. Forget coils, ignition - we just need to know why it doesn't crank the engine at all.
1st: Follow battery pos cable to what will be called the solonoid. Most are on the starter motor themselves - some are in line on that cable. I DON'T KNOW THIS CAR AT ALL BUT THIS IS GENERIC MECHANICS FOR THIS. That solonoid may be the item that is clicking. It can do that for a few reasons. Low battery charge is #1 but you ruled that out. Insignifcant contacts with the cables (both at both ends) as already mentioned. Looking good isn't enough so for now put your hand on them and just tug or twist a little and they might make a good connection.
Expecting the solonoid to be the problem and it does click as you said then the wiring that tells it to try must be at least fair. A solonoid is making a strong electrical connection for the starter with promps from you ignition key with a smaller wire. Solonoid could just be stuck and a tap on it gently with a hammer might get it going for now.
When in doubt - don't do things as you could make things worse. If you had a test light I could suggest to test some things that should light up the test light when trying to start and with a voltmeter (mulitmeter) we could isolate the fault.
Chances are from what I'm guessing is the starter itself has a problem and that's a wild guess so far.
HOW DO YOU KNOW THE BATTERY IS GOOD? Just lights coming on means nothing. It's take tons of power to crank the engine - lights are a small drain on the battery. Without tools you could get an idea by leaving headlights on, interior light on and crank the engine - if the click dims the lights lots or they go out completely that could lead us to either the battery is no good or the connections as first mentioned.
A good solid jump start from a running donor car should rule out the power of the battery you have as the problem if that doesn't crank the engine. It's worth a try,

ok i tryed the jump start, but still nothing, i have booked it in 2moro, to try get it fixed, (fingers crossed), i forgot to say that i have a cobra alarm, immobiliser, i no this is not the problem, but just had to tellya, ok if the car gets fixed or not i will report back, as others might have this problem,
i just like to say i big thank you to Tom Greenleaf for helping me out so much, you are truely a friend,

Thanks for the kind words! I trust this will be a simple fix and you can report to the shop what you've tried so far. I also don't think some alarm system is doing this as it makes a noise as if it's trying. Good luck with the fix,
