Really bad gas mileage!!! Sign In

Hey guys so I have a 2000 dodge ram 1500 5.2l V8 it's a rear wheel drive and it's getting 9-10 in the city and 10-12 on the freeway. It's an extended cab with a 6 foot bed. I read somewhere that my truck should be getting 12 in the city and 14 on the highway and just recently I read somewhere else that my truck should be getting 12 in the city and 17 on the high way. I take care of it but I know something is wrong but it's not throwing any codes at all. The exaughst smells rich and I'm pretty sure there's a problem with the EGR. Any advice on where to check and what to check would be awesome. Thanks guys. Oh and it's 14 years old with only 104000 miles on all original equipment.

There isn't anything necessarily wrong with that. Those EPA estimates are under ideal controlled conditions and you rarely match those numbers in the real world. Those trucks are notorious gas hogs. Once they get up in mileage they only get worse. Driving habits, tire pressures and seasonal weather are the biggest varying factors.

Agree on the EPA estimates.... disregard them.
that hiway MPG is almost the same as city- caught my eye.

As for the MPG - some things you can look at - EASILY
Is the check engine light on? Still a FREE scan would be advised - FREE.
Temperature is truck warming up to correct temp - @200deg- it matters.
Is vehicle STOCK? no modifications-

They put some pretty low differential gear ratios in a lot of these Dodge pickups.
