Problem With 1996 Chevy Silverado Starting Sign In

My 1996 Chevy Sit About 3 Years, When I Went To Start It Back Up The Starter Solenoid Small Post Was Not Getting Power. Checked Relay It Was Good & Checked Power Under Relay And Bottom Of Relay Socket Was Getting Power Just Not Down To Starter. Took Starter Off And Jumped It And It Was Good As Well. So I Jumped The Relay( Wire Straight From Ignition Fuse To Starter Small Post And Starter Turned Off Motor But Keep Turning. I Am At A Loss On What To Do Next. If Anyone Can Give Me Some More Ideas I Would Be Greatful( I'm Not A Good Mechanic Just A Shadetree Mechanic That Can Change Oil, Water Pump, Etc, So Please Use Lamon's Terms Please.

There is no simple answer here. The starter circuit has to be troubleshooted using a wiring diagram and a test light to find out where it's being lost.
For starters, see if you are getting power on the yellow wire at the Park/Neutral position switch on the transmission when the key is in "start" position, assuming this is an auto trans.

Re: Problem With 1996 Chevy Silverado Starting Sign In

Ok Let Me Ask This: This Vehicle Is Being Power Be Jumper Cables From Another Vehicle Could For Some Reason That Not Provide Enough Power For The Switches(Relay, Neutral, etc.). I Ran A Jumper Wire To Starter And Engine Turned Over But Kept Turning When Back In On Position!! I Checked Starter Relay It Works, Checked Park/Neutral Switch Getting No Power. All Fuses Are Good. Is There A Fusable Link I'm Missing Somewhere?? Or Is There An Ignition Relay I'm Missing. Where Would I Find These Devices At?? The Under The Hood Fuse For Ignition Are Good!!

You definitely need to get a good battery in that truck before testing anything. You not only are tainting your testing but you could do serious damage to the donor vehicle. You should never use jumper cables from another vehicle for anything these days.

Ok Hooked Up New Battery, I Have Power To Transmission Park/Neutral Yellow Wire. I Don't Have Power To Purple Wire On Starter Solenoid! All Fuses Remained Good. Where Do I Go Next Or Do I Need To Find Someone With A GM Computer Plug-in To Check It??? By The Way Thank You Very Much HT For Your Helpful Info!!!!!!!! Could It Actually Be The Starter Relay Acting Funny. When Turned Key On Relay Did Not Click!!!!

Re: Problem With 1996 Chevy Silverado Starting Sign In

You're pretty much solved your problem. You have power into the Park/neutral switch and not back out. The switch is either bad or out of adjustment. Move the shifter around and make sure it isn't hot in a different position.

Re: Problem With 1996 Chevy Silverado Starting Sign In

The purple wire triggers the starter relay and it should be powered when in park or neutral and the key is held in "start". The yellow wire is the starter feed from the ignition switch.

Re: Problem With 1996 Chevy Silverado Starting Sign In

You're not following here. The yellow wire will be hot any time the key is in "start" coming into the park/neutral switch. The purple will be hot when in start and park/neutral and will be leaving the park/neutral switch.

Re: Problem With 1996 Chevy Silverado Starting Sign In

Ok I Follow You Now So I Need To Find The Purple Wire In The Park Switch! Because The Purple Wire I Have Been Talking About Doesn't Go To Park Switch It Goes From The Starter Solenoid To The Relay Box!! So Now I Will Go Find A Purple Wire Coming From Park Switch To See If It Has Power??

Re: Problem With 1996 Chevy Silverado Starting Sign In

OK, check 40amp maxi fuse #6

Never mind. That has to be good or you wouldn't have power at the yellow wire.

Sounds like the relay is bad, assuming all the wiring contacts and connectors are good..
