Possible Ruined Engine? Sign In

Hey Guys, Hey Hammer...

I have a Question, my younger brother (19) is young and Dumb. And decided to take his 2000 Saturn LS2 Sedan through a good foot or two of Standing water on a flooded road.

I didn't know he had done it till a few DAYS later. The biggest problem right now, is the Alternator is shot (Related? I dunno). They way his engine is set up the alternator is near the bottom, so I know it went through some water. Regardless of that fact.

The engine at this point is making...the best way to describe it...a Grinding noise in the Engine...maybe not actually grinding...but that is the best way I can describe it...a Dry Grinding..The engine SEEMS to be running fine aside from the noise that worsens when applying Gas. His Air intake runs to the Bottom of his front Grill, and there was Standing water in his Air Filter housing.
My question...this damned Alternator, REBUILT is like $217.00 and I don't wanna tear into the engine and Drop that money. If the Engine is Doomed...Any Ideas?

You probably should look into this problem further before changing the alternator. It is very dangerous to go through deep water. The biggest risk is that water is sucked into the intake at high RPM and if sucked all the way to the cylinder, it will bend or break a connecting rod immediately. That doesn't sound like what happen to you but check to see if the air filter got saturated anyway. You're going to have to get the car in the air and find out exactly where that noise is coming from. You also want to see if any computers got wet.

It's not the Filter, I actually removed the Air Intake, to see if the sound was coming from the intake...and It's not...It is Further in...

That's what I figured, I'd have to take it in for a good diagnosis....

No, I want to know if the air filter got wet to have an idea if we should be concerned about possible water intake.

Well, when I pulled the Filter, it had been a few days, and was Dry, it is an old filter (Needed Changed) so it is hard to see if it was really saturated. But in the Bottom of the Air Filter housing. There was a layer of Standing water. So I KNOW it got it.

It needs to be checked out pretty thoroughly in that case.

Have you tried taking the belt off and seeing if the noise goes away? That would be the fast way to see if its in the engine or the accessories. Mud in an alternator can sound hideous. Let your brother know that saturns are better boat anchors than they are boats themselves.
