Please Help!! Ford F150 5.4 engine problem. Sign In

My husband has a 2000 Ford F150 5.4L 135,000 miles. Truck started running rough, spark plugs were stripped, took it to a mechanic in the family who replaced the spark plugs and both heads and timing chain. At first, with the new heads, there was still one cylinder with no compression, did a wet compression test at Ford and determined that it must be a defective head, replaced the one new head again and now there is still no compression on the one and low compression on the other side as well. The truck is running much worse and not even driveable after these repairs. Mechanic says it is probably a lower end engine problem but we hear from others that it may be just that the new timing chain is not on right. Please, which makes more sense??!! We have no more $, can't afford to replace the truck and are completely screwed without the truck, we can't figure out what to do but it would help to know a little better what we are dealing with.

These aren't the easiest engines to do timing chains on and some special tools are required or damage can be done to the engine. Depending on whether you have the L or Z 5.4 (8th digit of the vin) it may also have cam phasers (variable valve timing, Z engine) which if installed incorrectly can also give you problems....

I don't know how familiar your tech is with these engines and it's possible something else could be going on. If he's not experienced with this setup and doesn't have all the special tools to do it at this point your only real option is going to be to take to a shop that is equipped to handle this type of job.....

I know it's a little too late for this now but for the future, if this happens again, plugs blowing out of 5.4s if a very common thing. There are kits available to repair this problem. Now if the plug had already blown out of this cylinder and this was a failed repair then the heads would've had to come off.

Hope things work out for you.....Good luck
