i have a 1.4 ford escort 1994 cvh engine with loss of power issues,idle is crap ( konks out after a bit ) its driving really bad,poor excelration,juddery spot when the revs start to go up,then clears a bit,i have to keep dropping into 4th gear to get the revs up so i can drive in 5th gear.top speed at the moment is about 75mph ! some times there is a very small pop ( very small back fire from the exuast ) it feels like its holding back for some reason.OK i have changed the air filter,put redex through the systom,put new spark plugs and leads on,put a new ignition coil on.and its still doing it,running out of ideas now,its really getting me down.anything else i could try ?

another thing that is strange,EVERYTIME i fill up at a petrol station it takes ages to start the car ! when i open the petrol cap can air get into the tank and effect engine somehow !? stange i know !

Check fuel pressure with a fuel gauge.. 1.8L 38~46psi 1.9L 30~45psi while the engine is running. I would also check the timing belt if it hasn't been changed in a while might have skipped a tooth.
