PLEASE HELP Sign In

I have a 1998 Nissan Altima, 4 Cyl, approx 150,000 miles, auto transmission. When I stop the car it stutters. It doesnt do it when accelerating. When I turn the car off, it doesnt want to start right up. If I let it set for a while it will start right up but not immediatley after driving it. I've had it diagnosed and they said no codes where showing on the computer. I've since replaced the spark plugs, distrib cap/rotor, and air filter. My husband thinks that it might be the oxygen sensor. But wouldnt that show up on the computer if their was a problem with that. And if it is that, I've been told I have a front and rear oxygen sensor. How do I know which one to replace? Or maybe you have another idea on what the problem could be? I can't afford to keep dumping money into it. Please someone help me with this problem.

Look for vacuum leaks. These will cause a running problem at idle and not really noticeable at road speeds. Check EGR system for hanging open. (If Nissan has EGR)

On the O2 sensor, it could make the vehicle run badly at idle, but you are correct about scanner readings. But if just the codes were pulled, they may not set a code. They could still be right on the edge of the parameters for setting a code. We will try the easy and inexpensive things first. Those O2 sensors on your vehicle are quite pricey. You might want to change the fuel filter while you are doing the regular maintenance anyhow. Can't hurt anything. Have you noticed a drop in fuel mileage? Or smell excessive unburnt fuel from the tail pipe? If so, you may want to check the fuel pressure regulator. Keep us posted.
