PLEASE HELP! Sign In

Hi, so my wife and i purchased a 1991 Pontiac Sunbird (3.1) about 2 weeks ago, when we purchased the car it had died within the first 24 hours of the purchase. The seller had his mechanic look at it and he said that it had blown a fuze, after replacing it (Red 10 fuzes) the car started right up so we kept the deal and stayed with the car now we can't afford to keep it and are trying to resell it. In doing so we had a gentleman test drive it 2 days ago, didn't seem that he knew much about cars and he asked to test drive it, I whent with him; we backed out and started driving out of my parking lot. He turned the corner then decided he wanted to floor it he gased it and after about 40 feet the car stalled out and died, he tried turning it over but was unsuccessful, we parted ways and we took a look at it a little closer. Come to find out it seems to be the same thing that happened before but worse, because we've tried doing what was done last time and replace the fuze, but even with the fuze replaced it wouldn't turn over after getting frustrated i looked at the fuze again guess it had blown that one too, we put a new one in and the very same thing. I don't seem to understand what's going on here and the wife and i are hurting for money badly and don't have anymore to sink into this stupid thing. Please help!

Which fuse is blowing? fuel pump, PCM, ??

If a fuse is blowing there is a issue with the circuit it is supplying power to or the component it's connected to.

It's the ECM fuse, i just whent down and looked at it. Tried putting a new fuse in where the old one was the second i touched the fuze to the box it sparked and blew the fuse again. So it's not even connecting.

Unfortunately I do not have access to wiring diagrams for that particular car I would recommend buying a book with diagrams for that car.

It will require a little work that may be beyond your skill level.

What you need to do is trace the circuit and figure out where the wire is shorted or run a overlay disconnecting the old circuit and running a new wire.

It's possible it's the ECM, you can try to disconnect the ECM (Engine control module) put a fuse in and see if blows. If it does then it's the circuit at fault. if it doesn't blow try reconnecting ECM if it blows again after reconnecting ECM it's likely the ECM is at fault.

Look at the cover that covers the fueses and see what circuit it's on.
