Overheating jeep, again

96 jeep cherokee sport 4.0 72k. Last summer the jeep would overheat usually after coming off the highway to street speeds. I flushed the coolant and changed the thermostat (thermostat I bought came with a pre-drilled hole). Now that it's getting warmer outside, the problem starts again. Ill be on the highway for an hour, and when I stop to pay a toll or when I get to the local streets, the engine gets so hot I have to blast the heater to prevent the heat gauge from redlining. Any suggestions? thanks

I would suspect a combination of a radiator that isn't up to snuff any more and a weak fan clutch, assuming it doesn't have an electric fan.

Agree that radiator or fan for it isn't capable. That hole in new thermostat is there so you can fill this full and slowly air will bleed thru that - some will use a tiny notch on the side and neither are causing overheating however done. Low coolant level will and noticed when heater doesn't blow hot for you.
4.0 engine is pretty tough but do everything still not to overheat,

If it helps you guys, the Jeep Cherokee has both a clutch fan and an electric one. An auxiliary electric is mounted on the radiator next to the clutch fan driven from the engine. When the radiators go out they can definately do this. I had a Cherokee myself with the same engine that did the same thing. When its getting hot, does the electric fan come on? Its temp controlled but if you have working AC then it will stay on anytime the AC is on. Easy way to see if the electric is working and carry on with other tests as Tom and HT have suggested.

No Nick, they all don't. I have a 97 sitting in my driveway right now that has clutch fan only.
