Overheat? No gauge warning, car shut off. Sign In

98 chevy malibu.

Was driving fine, then it started slowing down while gas peddle pressure was constant, then picked up speed again, did this one more time before check engine light began blinking on and off for a few seconds while making a barely audible rattling-type noise, then stopped blinking and stayed on, car shut off and oil and battery light came on at the same time the power steering went out, I was able to coast to the side of I4, where I noticed car was smoking pretty bad (white smoke) which continued for about 20 minutes then stopped. When it began not holding speed I did check the temp gauge and it was showing everything was fine...so what could this be?

Basics: What fluid is low now? Coolant? Oil? Sure seems like a hard overheat with the details given. PS out and the warning lights when engine stalled would be normal for a stalled engine for any reason.

Spewed white smoke for 20 minutes is not good and will show something wrong upon inspection,

T
