Oil pressure goes up and down not related to RPM Sign In

Hi I am sure this question was asked before but the forum is soooo big and I couldn’t find the answer. I have a 1985 isuzu trooper and my oil pressure gauge is showing me everything from 3 to 8 (which is the highest). My mechanic says it is OK but I don’t know as it is not directly related to the RPM’s the engine does. I don’t use more oil than normal for such an old car though. Any ideas?

Could be a few things. Bad sender or gauge, sludge messing up the program or perhaps oil pump has issues.

I'd take a good look at the oil, dipstick, under oil fill cap and inside there for evidence of sludge. I don't suggest trying to flush out sludge if you think that may be the problem but rather change the oil very frequently for a while as the new oil and a new filter each time will gently clean up the show if not too far gone,

I would have your mechanic test the actual oil pressure with an external test gauge; this would confirm whether it was a mechanical issue or an electrical one.
